Story Behind Colbie

Colbie Caillat Background

Sounds like sweet honey flowing over rocks ...

When her official website went up I checked it out and found a documentary-style video on Colbie. It was done really well and I transcribed it, because it works well as a conversational biography. That is, it's words directly from her and those around her so it feels more personal than the generic text I see copied everywhere.

EPK Video

Colbie: I was born in Malibu in this house on the cliff overlooking the ocean, it was gorgeous. And Hawaii also, it's my other love.

Diane (Colbie's Mom): Pretty much from the time we started teaching her her ABC's ... we knew she had a voice.

Colbie: I've been singing since I was eleven, but I've only been writing for about two years. I wanted to be a singer and my dad was like "You have to write your own songs and learn an instrument" so my parents put me in guitar lessons. And I wrote a song after my first guitar lesson and it wasn't that good, but it was ... I dunno, a start.

Diane: It just sort of blossomed from there.

Colbie: And then my friend Jason Reeves and I got together and just started writing songs. And we started working on it with my producer Michael Blue. Michael Blue I've known since I was fifteen, he was in a band and they were assigned to my dad's record label.

Michael (Record Producer): I first met Colbie when I was working with her father, Ken Caillat, who is a producer and he produced a lot of the famous Fleetwood Mac records in the seventies.

Ken (Colbie's Dad): One day I said to Michael, I said "You know my daughter is a great singer and she's never sang in a microphone; I'd love to have her experience that.

Blue: And she would come to the studio, she would sing little ideas to me as she was hearing my songs being recorded.

Colbie: He was working on his album and he heard me sing a harmony, like just standing in the room. And he's like "Oh my gosh, that sounds so cool!"

Blue: And I just thought she had the most wonderful voice. From then on whenever I was doing any demos or writing a song I would try and talk Colbie into coming into the studio because I really loved her voice.

Colbie: And then we just built this relationship. I feel so comfortable with him, working with him and writing. Yeah, that's pretty much how it goes.

Diane: And she started putting everything up on her MySpace; and it just started from there.

Colbie: MySpace has helped so much. Before no one would've even heard of me, just people in LA, just going to see a show if I even played; and I didn't play that often.

Diane: Word of mouth, people started liking her, started hitting on her page and started getting a lot of attention.

Chad Jensen (Manager) It's really an amazing story, almost a fairy tale of a story. She went from like 300 plays a day to 1000 plays a day to 7000 plays a day to like 60,000 plays a day now.

Blue: I started to get 1000 plays a day, for my project, and I think that's pretty cool. But she gets 80,000 plays a day.

Diane: Just kind of got her to number one, unsigned artist, on all her genres: the folk, accoustic, and soul.

Colbie: MySpace is the thing that does it. It's a huge help. I started out playing in just little clubs a year ago, now we've been traveling. We've gone to Texas and Nashville and Iowa and New York; I leave to London next Monday on my birthday, I'll be 22. Playing a couple of shows out there and then going to Germany for a festival. I guess there's going to be 150,000 people or something ... so it's gonna be crazy. I'm going to be on the same stage as the White Stripes and Evanescence and all these amazing bands. So I'm really excited I'm freaking out! It took a while to get used to, but I'm learning fast and I'm loving it. I'm always a little bit nervous, for sure, but after a couple of songs in I get a little bit more comfortable and I see that everyone's having fun. It's getting a lot better, I love it.

Jensen: I think what people like about her is that she's a real artist. It's fresh, it's different than all the other pop music that's on the radio today. She's always stayed in touch with her fans, she's asked her fans what their opinion is about, you know, what's her best song, what should be her first single.

Colbie: All my friends and fans on MySpace, it's really cool when I play shows. They're all like, they're all up in the front and they're singing like every word.

Blue: People can just really connect with Colbie's voice. It just comes from the heart, it's very soulful. I just really think she touches people.

Colbie: With everything that's been happening I guess I just, this all just new to me so nothing has hit me yet. Like I'm doing a music video and I'm on iTunes and nothing has really sunk in yet. When people remind me to think about it I'm like, "Oh yah ... that's pretty cool!"

Remember to view the video if you haven't already. I'd embed it here, but it ain't no YouTube and it don't work right correctly. :)
